Where to Get Boxes for a Move

We have a lot of stuff, so we need to acquire a lot of boxes to move.  You can buy boxes from moving companies or Lowes, but those costs can add up quickly.  I recommend the only boxes you buy are specialty ones for your TV and other important electronics.

Here are a few different places that you can look to get free boxes:

1. Your Office

The boxes that paper and office supplies are delivered in are great for moving, so make friends with your front desk assistant.  They normally have extra reinforcements because they carry heavy supplies, so you don’t have to worry about the bottom falling out when you’re moving.  The only downside about these boxes are that they don’t have handles, so you have to carry them from the bottom.

2. Grocery Store

Ask the manager at the customer service desk if they would be willing to hold boxes for you.  Normally they have no problem with this and tell you what days they have deliveries so that you can pick them up the same day.  If you see a stocker unloading boxes, feel free to also ask them for boxes.  They will normally give them to you with a smile.

3. Liquor Stores

Liquor stores have some of the best boxes for moving.  Most of their boxes have dividers inside of them to keep the bottles from hitting each other, so these are great for packing glasses and other breakable items.

4. Freecycle and Craiglist

People list free boxes all the time on Freecycle and Craigslist.  Keep an eye on both and you might even get some great specialty boxes for free.

Where do you get the majority of your boxes when moving?
