I Learned a Little Something About Plumbing Today

So something that I haven't mentioned on this blog before is that we're house hunting.

Well, we found an adorable house while out looking today.

It was a nice size with 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, and room for an office.  Gorgeous deck out back.  And a great price!

So, our realtor sent us the seller's disclosure and we started reading it.  We came across this question:

Are you aware of any polybutylene plumbing?

They checked yes.

I assumed it couldn't be a good thing because it wouldn't be on the disclosure statement if it was.

I started doing some research and apparently polybutylene plumbing is bad.  Really, really bad.  It was used in a lot of houses in the 80s and 90s because it was inexpensive.  Then they found that pipes can burst at any time.  Uh oh!

So, after my lesson in plumbing, we decided to pass on the house.  :-(

So, make sure if you're home buying to take a look at that question.  If they say yes, run far, far away unless you're willing to pay to replace the polybutylene with copper.

  1. My brother and his wife had a house with this kind of plumbing and it was indeed a real mess. Several times their kitchen/laundry room flooded because of the pipes bursting. Good thing you passed those problems up! Hope you find a house soon!!!
