Local Tourist: Florida Caverns

 I've always heard about the Florida Caverns, but after almost 10 years of here, I had never made the trip.  J and I were having a little bit of wanderlust this past weekend so we decided to make the hour drive over to Marianna to check it out.  It costs $5 to park and then $8 per person for the cave tour.  Tickets for the tour are sold on a first come, first serve basis and only 25 people can go on each tour.

During the tour you are about 50 feet underground.  It's about 3/4 miles long and takes about 45 minutes.  The average temperature in the caverns is 65 degrees, so it's fabulous after walking outside in the 90 degree heat.

The caverns were very pretty and had an interesting history to them.  We got to see how a sinkhole was created from underneath, which was very neat.  I have toured many caves in the midwest which are a lot bigger and more spectacular, but it was interesting seeing the differences between those and Florida.  We thoroughly enjoyed our trip and would definitely go again.  I highly recommend it if you're in the area.

Guide to Animal Kingdom Attractions

Animal Kingdom is one of my favorite parks, but you can easily complete it in half of a day.  There are not too many attractions and there is a lot of walking trails to see animals.

Animal Kingdom, like other Disney World parks, is broken up into sections.  Here is my guide to attractions at Animal Kingdom.  I am not going to touch on the walking trails, since they're exactly like they sound: you walk around and look at animals.

Discovery Island

It's Tough to be a Bug
3D show featuring the characters from It's a Bug's Life.  The are special effects that include smells and other things.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Available, but not needed
Fear Factor: If you're sensitive to 3D, skip this one.  Also, if you or your kids are scared of bugs, don't go on this.


Africa

Kilimanjaro Safaris
Hop on a safari jeep and see real animals all around you.  Each ride is different.  This is my favorite ride at Animal Kingdom and I could ride it tons of times.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Available.  I normally ride first thing in the morning using standby and then again later in the day using FP.
Fear Factor: Road gets a little rough at points and there is an area where the bridge shakes, but nothing terribly scary.

Wildlife Express Train
The train takes you out to Rafiki Planet Watch.  Short ride that shows you some behind the scenes areas of Animal Kingdom.

Height Requirements: None

Fear Factor: Nothing scary about the train ride


Asia

Flights of Wonder
Show featuring birds

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Not Available
Fear Factor: Only scary if you don't like birds

Kali River Rapids
White water rapid ride.  You are very likely to get wet.

Height Requirements: 38"
FP+ Available: Available and highly recommend if it's hot outside
Fear Factor: There are some drops, but they're not too bad.  The one main drop will take your breath away, but it's nothing like Splash Mountain or those kind of rides.  For someone who hates drops, I love this ride.

Expedition Everest
Roller coaster that takes you through the mountains.  Beware you may run into a Yeti!

Height Requirements: 44"
FP+ Available: Available and high recommended.  There is a single rider line that normally moves pretty quicker.
Fear Factor: Kind of intense and does go backwards at points.


DinoLand USA

Finding Nemo The Musical
Live stage musical telling the story of Finding Nemo.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Available, but not really needed.  It's a huge theater and you'll be able to find a seat somewhere.
Fear Factor: Not scary at all

Primeval Whirl
Jerky mouse coaster that also spins you.  Do not ride if you have any neck or back problems.

Height Requirements: 48"
FP+ Available: Available, but not really needed.
Fear Factor: Looks like a kid's roller coaster, but it's actually pretty intense.  It whips you around corners while spinning you in circle. Not fun at all.

Triceratops Spin
Just like Dumbo.  Ride in a dinosaur in a circle

FP+ Available: Not Available
Fear Factor: If you don't like heights or spinning in circles, skip this one.

Dinosaur
Ride through history with dinosaurs.  Can be jerky in areas.

Height Requirements: 40"
FP+ Available: Available
Fear Factor: Animatronic dinosaurs jump out at your in areas.  Very jerky and rough.

Guide to Hollywood Studios Attractions

Hollywood Studios has a few can't miss rides, a few other rides, and a ton of shows!  This is a half-day park for me, but still a lot of fun.

Hollywood Studios is divided into areas named after streets.  Here is my guide to all the attractions at Hollywood Studios.

Hollywood Boulevard & Echo Lake

The Great Movie Ride
A live action tour through different movie sets.  The drivers acts out scenes throughout the tour.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Available.  Ride in the evening for less of a line.
Fear Factor: May be scary for children who don't understand the difference between acting and realty.

The American Idol Experience
Like the TV show with guests singing and judges judging.  The winner each day gets a ticket to audition for the real American Idol.  The last show of the day has the highest quality talent.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Available, but not needed
Fear Factor: Only scary when you get a bad singer

Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular
Live action show that goes behind the scenes of how stunts are done in movies.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Available, but not needed.  Tons of room in the theater, but show up about 30 minutes in advance to get a decent seat.
Fear Factor: Some kids might get scared of the gun shots and explosions

Star Tours
3D flight simulator that takes you through Star Wars scenes (you will often get different ride experiences)

Height Requirements: 40"
FP+ Available: Available, but ride in the morning or evening and you won't need it
Fear Factor: If you're sensitive to 3D or simulators, don't ride.


Streets of American & Commissary Lane

Lights, Motors, Action Extreme Stunt Show
Live action show that goes behind the scenes of how car stunts are performed in movies.  Arrive early for a good seat and sit higher in the stadium for a better view.

FP+ Available: Available, but not needed
Fear Factor: Kids may be scared by some of the gun shots or explosions

Studio Backlot Tour
Tour behind the scenes where props and costumes are made.  You also get to see a couple action shows during the tour.

Fear Factor: Don't sit children on the left side because that side is closest to one of the action shows with explosions and fire.

MuppetVision3D
3D show featuring the Muppets

Pixar Place, Animation Courtyard, & Mickey Avenue

Super fast roller coaster themed to Aerosmith.  There are inversions and twists and turns.

FP+ Available: Available and highly recommend.  Most people rush here first thing in the morning.
Fear Factor: Scary if you don't like roller coasters

Tower of Terror
Elevator ride that ends up dropping you 13 stories in a series of ups and downs. There is a chicken exit right before boarding if you would like to walk through and see the theming.

Height Requirements: 40"
FP+ Available: Available and highly recommend.  If people aren't rushing to Rock n Roller Coaster or Toy Story, they will go here.
Fear Factory: Very scary, especially if you don't like drops.

Guide to Epcot Attractions

Epcot is a huge park, but there are not too many attractions.  The ones they do have are very popular and a lot of fun.

Here is a guide to all the attractions throughout Epcot.  Epcot is divided into two sections: Future World in the front and World Showcase in the back.

Future World

Spaceship Earth
This ride is located in giant ball icon at the front of the park.  The ride takes you through different sections of history.

Height Requirement: None
FP+ Available: Not Available.  Lines are shorter later in the day than they are first thing in the morning.
Fear Factor: Moves pretty slowly and not really scary.  Makes me a little anxious though because I know how far off the ground I actually am even though I can't see the ground.

The Seas With Nemo and Friends
Clamshell ride that takes you through the seas with Nemo and his friends.  There are also real fish tanks that you can see in and they project characters from the movie in with the real fish.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Available
Fear Factor: Not scary at all.  There is one section where you get onto the East Australian Current and it kind of made me dizzy because the images on the screen were moving and so was the cart.  Just look at the floor during this section and you'll be fine.

Turtle Talk With Crush
Interactive comedy show with Crush from Finding Nemo. 

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Available, but not needed.  A lot of people can join the shows at once and your wait time is likely just going to be for the next show to start.  If there is a long line, walk around the pavilion and look at the aquariums and then come back.
Fear Factor: Funny, not scary

Soarin' 
Board a ride vehicle and then be lifted towards the ceiling.  The vehicle will move with the screen as you soar over California.  They add smells into the room to create a fully immersive experience.

Height Requirements: 40"
FP+ Available: Available and highly recommended unless you go first thing in the morning.  This is one of the most popular rides and almost always has over an hour wait.
Fear Factor: If you are scared of heights or if simulated environments make your nauseous, I don't recommend it.

Living With the Land
One of my favorites rides at Disney World.  Boat ride that takes you on a tour of the greenhouses at Epcot.  If it's hot outside, this is a good ride to get on.  A lot of it is inside and it's air conditioned.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Available, but not needed.  Rarely has a long line.
Fear Factor: Not scary at all

The Circle of Life
Movie about the environment, hosted by the characters of Lion King.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Not Available
Fear Factor: Just a movie.  Nothing scary about it.

Journey Into Imagination With Figment
Journey through an exploration of your senses.  Good ride for young children.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Available.  Rarely has a wait though, so not needed.
Fear Factor: Not scary

Captain EO
Outdated 3D movie starring Michael Jackson.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Available, but not needed
Fear Factor: None, but if you're cautious of 3D movies, don't ride.

Ellen's Energy Adventure
45 minute attraction about energy hosted by Ellen DeGeneres and Bill Nye the Science Guy.  You are seated in rows and move between different movie screens and dinosaurs.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Not Available
Fear Factor: None

Mission: Space
Simulator that turns you in to an astronaut and takes you to Mars.  There are two versions of this ride: Orange is the original and more intense, which Green is a less intense version.

Height Requirements: 44"
FP+ Available: Yes and I highly recommend it.  This ride can have a long wait at times.
Fear Factor: This ride can be pretty intense, especially if you do the Orange version.  You may get motion sick.

Test Track
Ride a car through a variety of tests and then on an outside banking track, going up to 65 MPH.

Height Requirements: 40"
FP+ Available: Yes and I highly recommend it.  Very popular ride.
Fear Factor: I did not like this ride.  The quick speeds and sudden jerking movements was not fun for me.  The track part at the end wasn't too bad.  Would not ride it again.  I would recommend you trying it though because most people seem to enjoy it.


World Showcase

Gran Fiesta Tour
Small World type ride based in Mexico.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Not Available
Fear Factor: Not scary at all

Mealstrom
Viking boat ride that takes you through Norway of the past.  At one point, your boat starts going backwards.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Yes, but I don't feel it's necessary
Fear Factor: May be a little scary for some because it seems like your boat will turn over.  Also, the are a couple drops, but they're pretty mild.  I would compare them to the drop in Pirates of the Caribbean.


Epcot is a great park, but doesn't have too much to keep young kids occupied.  Great park for the adults though!

Guide to Magic Kingdom Attractions

When thinking of Walt Disney World, most people's mind immediately goes to Magic Kingdom.  There are rides for everyone from toddlers to grandma.  Even if you're a ride chicken, there are plenty of rides to ride at Magic Kingdom.

Here's a guide to every attraction (and soon to be attraction) at Magic Kingdom.  Magic Kingdom is broken down in to different "worlds".  I'm going to travel through Magic Kingdom in a clockwise direction.

Main Street USA

Main Street USA is where you are as soon as you walk into Magic Kingdom.  This area is mostly shops and restaurants.  There are normally a good bit of characters throughout this area and you can meet the only Mickey that talks in Town Square Theater.


Adventureland

The first "world" you come to is Adventureland.  There are many attractions in this area that are suitable for the entire family.

Swiss Family Treehouse
This ride is modeled after the treehouse in the movie Swiss Family Robinson.  There is no real ride aspect to this.  You will be doing a lot of climbing up stairs and walking through different rooms.  There is a cool view from the top of the treehouse.  If you want to do this, wait until later in the day.  Not exciting enough to wait in line for.

FP+ Available: Not available
Fear Factor: If you're scared of heights, I wouldn't recommend it.

Magic Carpets of Aladdin
You ride around in a circle on magic carpets.  Is fun for little kids, but not terribly exciting for adults.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Available, but line isn't normally long enough to worry about it.
Fear Factor: If you're scared of heights or get dizzy from spinning, I wouldn't recommend it.







Enchanted Tiki Room
Show with animatronic birds hanging from the ceiling that sing.  Not a terribly interesting show, but it's inside so it's nice if you want to get out of the sun.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Not available
Fear Factor: It's dark inside, so some kids might not like that.  For adults, it's not scary at all unless you're terrified of fake birds.

Jungle Cruise
You hop on a boat with a skipper for makes corny jokes while riding around on a river full of animatronic animals.  It's a classic Disney ride and one of my favorites.  Don't worry, you will not get wet on this ride.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Available.  If this ride is a must do for you and the park is going to be busy, a FP might not hurt.  But you can ride it early morning or in the evening without much of a wait at all.
Fear Factor: Warn the kids ahead of time the animals and story are fake, but nothing scary at all about this ride.

Pirates of the Carribean
A boat ride through a village of animatronic pirates.  Line and ride are both inside and air conditioned, so great for those hot times in the park.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Available.  Lines can get long, so if it's a must do, FP might not be a bad idea.
Fear Factor: The ride gets pitch black and there's a small drop at the beginning.  This drop makes me a little anxious, but it's really not that bad.


Frontierland

The next "world" is Frontierland.  This area has some more thrill rides that Adventureland. 

Country Bear Jamboree
Inside singing show put on by animatronic bears.  Really outdated show, but it's air conditioned, so if you're hot, it's a great place to stop!

FP+ Available: Not Available
Fear Factor: Not scary at all

Splash Mountain
Boat ride with 4 or 5 small drop and then a huge drop at the end.  You are very likely to get wet.

Height Requirements: 40"
FP+ Available: Available.  This ride gets very busy, so if you want to ride it, I would highly recommend a FP.
Fear Factor: I personally won't ride this ride because the huge drop scares the crap out of me.  If drops and heights don't bother you, then you will be fine.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
This is a tamer roller coaster through mountains and caverns.

Height Requirements: 40"
FP+ Available: Available.  This ride gets very busy, so if you want o ride it, I would highly recommend a FP.
Fear Factor: There are no large drops, inversions, or anything like you would see on the bigger roller coasters.  It also doesn't go too terribly fast.  This is one of the few roller coasters I am willing to ride.

Tom Sawyer Island
The only way to get here is to ride a raft.  It's essentially a giant island that has walking trails and fun things for kids to play with.  This usually opens later and closes earlier than the rest of the park, so if you want to do it, visit mid-day.

FP+ Available: Not Available.
Fear Factor: Nothing scary about it


Liberty Square

Only a couple attractions in our new "world", Liberty Square.

Liberty Square Riverboat
This is a real boat that takes you on a tour around Tom Sawyer Island.  Very cool to see the sights throughout the area.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Not Available
Fear Factor: Nothing scary about it.  The boat doesn't go very fast, but if you are very susceptible to sea sickness, I probably wouldn't ride it.

Haunted Mansion
Clamshell tour through a mansion that is haunted by ghosts.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Available.  Can get busy, so if you must ride, a FP might not be a bad idea.
Fear Factor: The opening area makes me a little anxious because they squeeze a ton of people into a little room and close all the doors.  If you're not claustrophobic though, then this shouldn't bother yo.  It is a dark ride, so it may scare some small children.


Fantasyland

This area has a ton of attractions, especially for the little ones.  This area was recently updated with some new attractions (and a new one soon to open).

It's a Small World
Boat ride through different rooms with singing animatronics from around the world.  The song will be stuck in your head for the rest of the day!

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Available, but not necessary.  Ride this early in the morning or in the evening for barely any line.
Fear Factor: Nothing scary at all

Peter Pan's Flight
Ride vehicles are suspended from the roof and you "fly" through the different scenes.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Available and highly recommend.  This is a very popular ride and it almost always has long lines.
Fear Factor: Mostly in the dark, so may scare small children.  Rides are suspended from the ceiling, so it may make you a little anxious if you're scared of heights.

Mickey's Philharmagic
3D movie featuring music from various Disney movies.  Great to visit in the afternoon to get out of the heat.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Available, but not necessary
Fear Factor: Nothing scary about it, but if 3D imagery bothers you, I would skip it.

Journey of the Little Mermaid
Clamshell ride that takes you through scenes from The Little Mermaid. 

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Available.  Since this is a newer ride, lines can get long, so I would recommend arriving early or getting a FP.
Fear Factor: Ursula may be scary to little children, but nothing else scary about it.

Prince Charming Regal Carousel
Standard carousel ride.  The evil step-sisters from Cinderella are often found around this ride.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Not Available
Fear Factor: Nothing scary about it.  Moves slowly.

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
Board a honey pot and travel through the dreams of Winnie the Pooh.  There is an interactive play area for children in the standby line.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Available, but ride in the morning or evening and the line isn't too bad.
Fear Factor: Not scary at all, but there is a section with spinning and brightly colored parts that may make you dizzy.

Mad Tea Party
Classic Disney ride.  You board a tea cup and it spins you around and around.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Available
Fear Factor: You would never get me on this ride.  I would be sick in two seconds.  If spinning in circles doesn't bother you, then go ahead and ride it.

Dumbo the Flying Elephant
Board and elephant and go around in circles in the air.  A lot like the Magic Carpets of Aladdin.  Another classic Disney ride that kids love.  Indoor play area that is only available if you use the standby line.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Available, but you can't use the play area from the FP line.
Fear Factor: It doesn't go very high, but some people might not like it.

Barnstormer
A very, very short roller coaster made for kids.  I find this ride really rough on the back and neck, so I will not ride it.

Height Requirements: 35"
FP+ Available: Available, but not necessary.
Fear Factor: Not scary, but can be rough on adults

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (available in Spring 2014)
Roller coaster that seems like it will be a lot like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.  The cars on this ride will rock side by side.

Height Requirements: Not sure yet
FP+ Available: Available and I highly recommend it since it will be the newest ride when it opens.
Fear Factor: Not sure since it's not open yet


Tomorrowland

Last "world" of Magic Kingdom is Tomorrowland.  This is one of the more popular areas of the park, so either do it first thing in the morning or late at night.

Tomorrowland Speedway
Get in a "racecar" and ride around the track.  Not a fast ride at all and you don't have control of the car because it's on a track.  Fun for kids, not so much for adults.

Height Requirements: 32" to ride, 54" to drive
FP+ Available: Available.  The line for this ride can get long, so if your kids really want to ride it, get a FP or ride first thing in the morning.
Fear Factor: Not scary at all.

Space Mountain
An indoor roller coaster in the dark.  There are no inversions, but there are tons of drops and sharp turns.

Height Requirements: 44"
FP+ Available: Available and highly recommended.
Fear Factor: If you don't like roller coasters, drops, or the dark, don't go on this ride.

Astro Orbiter
Same idea as Dumbo and Magic Carpets, but a lot higher and a lot faster.  You have to take an elevator to get up to the platform.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Not Available
Fear Factor: If you're scared of heights, definitely do not ride this ride.

Tomorrowland Transit Authority People Mover
This is one of my favorite rides.  You board a train like vehicle and it takes you on a tour above Tomorrowland.  It actually takes you into some rides like Buzz Lightyear and Space Mountain.  Very cool to ride when Space Mountain is closed for repairs because you can see it with the lights on.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Not Available
Fear Factor: Not scary at all.  Parts are in the dark and there are a few sharp turns, but nothing to be afraid of.

Carousel of Progress
20-30 minute ride in a rotating theater that takes you through the decades to show how technology has changed.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Not Available
Fear Factor: Not scary at all.

Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin
You board the ride vehicle and shoot at "Z"s to earn points.  You compete against the person in the vehicle with you.  You have control of how your vehicle spins throughout the ride.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Available and recommended.  The line can get long.
Fear Factor: Not really scary at all.  The turning of the vehicle can be jarring, but you have complete control over it.

Stitch's Great Escape
This is one ride at Magic Kingdom I will never ride again and would never recommend anyone ride.  You get secured down in a seat and Stich appears and you go through a multi-sensory experience where he burps in your face.  Not enjoyable at all.

Height Requirements: 40"
FP+ Available: Not Available
Fear Factor: Just don't even bother

Monsters, Inc Laugh Floor
An interactive comedy show with the monsters from the movie.  You can text in jokes that may be shared during the show.

Height Requirements: None
FP+ Available: Available, but not necessary.  The theater can hold a ton of people and you will likely only wait the time between the next showing.
Fear Factor: Funny, not scary.


As you see, most rides at Magic Kingdom are pretty tame, with a few thrill rides thrown in there.  A very enjoyable park for every body!

Theme Park Tips for Ride Chickens

So I'll be the first to admit I'm a chicken when it comes to rides at theme parks.  The little 16 foot drop on Pirates of the Caribbean makes me anxious for goodness sakes.  I'm sure there are others out there like me, so I thought I would do a small series on how to not get anxiety about rides at theme parks.

Today I'm going to share some general tips that you can use at all theme parks and then every other day this week I'm going to share my opinions on all the rides at Walt Disney World.  Hopefully this will help you feel more comfortable and enjoy your time at the theme park!


1. My first tip is research!  Research all the rides at the park you're going to and see what they are like.  Most theme park's have their rides broken down by thrill rides and family rides.  Most family rides will be relatively tame, so those should be safe!

2. YouTube has a ton of ride videos that guests have taken.  This will give you an idea of what a ride looks like before you get to the park.

3. If there is a height requirement for a ride, it's normally because there is some kind of restraint.  Those rides are normally going to go up in the air, have some speed to them, or have a drop.  If you are scared of any of those things, I would avoid those rides.

4. Don't judge a ride based on how happy people are when they come off of it.  Everyone's thrill tolerance is different (even the kids), so if someone is smiling when they come off the ride, that doesn't mean you'll like it.

5. If you're still unsure of a ride, ask a cast member/employee their opinions.  They can tell you whether there are any drops or spinning in the ride that will make your queasy.


If you do your research and know which rides you will enjoy, you will have a blast!  There are a ton of rides at most theme parks for everyone!

Newport Aquarium, Newport, KY

This past week, we traveled up to Newport, Kentucky, near Cincinnati, and visited the Newport Aquarium.  At only $23 per adult and $15 per child, it's a reasonably priced day out.

The aquarium has all kinds of different sea life to look at and they even have a touch tanks with multiple types of sharks!  While we were there, we were even lucky enough to watch a shark lay an egg.

We spent about 3 hours at the aquarium, so I definitely think we got our money worth.  We easily could have spent even longer there, but we had other plans for the afternoon.

The aquarium also has a small restaurant, so you don't even need to leave for lunch if you don't want.  But if you do plan on leaving, I highly recommend walking over to Tom + Chee which is around the corner from the aquarium.  Their food is delicious!
